How a simple advert can change your life...for good.

THE ADVERT
Six months granny-sitting in the South of France
Separate en-suite accommodation. Ideally 40+ and non smoker.

ME
Laura Bennett, been divorced longer than married.
No dependents. Lease just ran out on my rented cottage. Sales job going nowhere.

So, I decided to go for it. I mean what could be simpler than looking after an 82 year old English lady? I had visions of gentle strolls to the boulangerie and compulsory siestas. But this was before I met Betty. She looked like everybody’s favourite grandmother until Jean- Louis arrived to pick her up on his Kawasaki 1200!

Imagine Samantha from Sex and the City, team her up with Rose from The Golden Girls and you have ALL EXPENSES PAID.

“Engaging, fun, unpredictable, fresh, original, silly, and just plain old enjoyable. Cracking idea and neatly executed. All I need is a deck chair and some sun and I'm sorted!”ANDREW MORGAN

ALL EXPENSES PAID Fact meets Fiction eBook Helen Ducal Simon Birch

I love this book! a before bedtime read to chuckle your way to blissful sleep. It gave me peace of mind at the end of the day—and of course loads of laughs. The protagonist takes you along for a joyous ride through her adventurous life— the mishaps, the madness, and all the tender, revealing moments that can only be articulated by a strong, mature, single woman with a rich sense who carves a way undaunted towards her own triumphs and lessons learned. There are riotous and poignant moments galore with every turn of the page—a must read if you too have moments of self-doubt and just want to break free—and it takes place in France -what more could you want? You won't be sorry—Bravo!

ALL EXPENSES PAID Fact meets Fiction eBook Helen Ducal Simon Birch Reviews

"All Expenses Paid" centres of the character of Laura and the job she takes as carer for an eighty two year old, Betty, living in the south of France with her daughter who is going on holidays with her husband and leaving Betty at home. I found I had to persevere in order to finish the book. The jumps in time and place were confusing in places and I found myself rereading sections to clarify my understanding. The characters to me lacked depth and were one dimensional and the dialogue between them a series of smart one liners.I found the preoccupation with men a bit repetitive and tiresome also. Some descriptions verge on bad taste in my opinion eg.When describing her image in an old bathroom mirror lit up by overhead flourescent lighting, Laura remarks," Perhaps this is how you look when you have leukaemia, my favoured disease of the week." The story does not flow smoothly and doesn't offer the reader much insight into the cultural side of living in France if that is what a reader expects. It's all a bit juvenile. Some readers may like the book but not those who expect a rewarding return for the time invested.
Fun beach read. I couldn't put it down even with children running after each other with baseball bats! Really, really cute. Didn't give it five stars as I reserve those for books bound to become classics.
This was one of the most fun and uplifting books I have read in a while. It was so interesting I hardly wanted to put it down. All Expenses Paid had me feeling like I was going through the adventures myself along with these two women. It is definitely a feel-good book. A great read for a rainy day on the sofa.
As with her other book, a great light read. She is an excellent writer and brings the people and the world(s) in which they live to life for those of us armchair travellers. And without any parading of personal pain to justify living as she does or why she travels abroad - a writing genre of which I am mortally tired. Save me from any more Eat Pray Love.
I loved the book because the primary character "Betty" is an Octigenarian that prooves you are as young or old as you choose. I had a relationship similar to the two main characters. My friend was Thelma. I was 42 and she was 82 when we met. She taught me that growing old does not mean resigning from life. This would be a fantastic movie!
This story pushed the boundaries of belief with some of its coincidences and little plot devices, but it was thoroughly enjoyable. Main character goes to France to be substitute caregiver for an elderly woman, who turns out to have the energy and partying spirit of a college girl -- she even stays out dancing all night with her secret (also geriatric) boyfriend. The main character was likable and funny. Excellent chick lit.
I originally gave this only three stars because of problems with the text which made it irritating and difficult to focus on the story. However, the author saw my comments, checked, and realized that there actually were serious formatting issues. She managed to have them fixed and now the book is just as easy to read as it is amusing. Kudos to the author! The story is a funny, fresh take on a sojourn in France and I enjoyed it a lot.
